Details
The Yinga Healing Group was created to address the need for culturally safe spaces where youth can connect with mentors, peers, and culture, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. The group provides a structured environment for young people to explore their identity and well-being through cultural engagement and a holistic approach. By integrating cultural elements with the SEWB framework, the group nurtures an understanding of wellbeing and identity.
The group is anchored in the key elements of the Yinga framework: Land, Rivers & Country, Spirituality, Community, Mind & Emotions, Body, and Family/Connections. Each of the eight sessions focuses on one of these elements, encouraging a deep and personal association with cultural principles and the concept of Yinga This approach has allowed the young people to experience a sense of self-determination and connection to their culture, while focusing on their individual well-being and social needs.
Outcome measures developed for the group demonstrated that each participant had a uniquely positive experience, with success defined by their individual needs and environments. Key outcomes include reduced social anxiety through enhanced peer relationships, strengthened cultural connection and pride, and the development of mentorship connections.
This presentation will share insights into the implementation of the Yinga Healing Group, highlighting enablers and barriers encountered along the way. Attendees will gain practical strategies for adapting and applying these principles within their own work and organisational contexts to support culturally grounded, youth-focused initiative.
