Details

Workers from KWY’s Male Behaviour Change Programs will present on supporting healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and young fellas aged 12 and up. The workers will talk about the importance of men working with men and using culture, clinical oversight and personal experience to lead positive behaviour change and support long-term healing. The presenters will yarn about the positive impacts of utilising a culturally grounded trauma informed approach that prioritises cultural connection, self-reflection, accountability and responsibility. This work builds on one of the original programs founded at KWY, known as My Journey. Established 14 years ago, My Journey focuses on working with male perpetrators who use violence, supporting males to recognise and cease harmful behaviours and take the steps towards positive change. Over time, KWY’s understandings and approaches have evolved, recognising that sustainable behaviour change is closely linked with healing from trauma and the loss of Cultural Identity. As a result, there is now a strong emphasis on healing alongside accountability and responsibility, to ensure that males are supported not only to cease harmful behaviours, but to also rebuild their sense of identity, purpose, and wellbeing. The presentation will conclude with the sharing of relevant information and data, that demonstrates both the need, and effectiveness of culturally trauma informed healing programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males.
