Aunty Muriel Bamblett is a proud Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Boon Wurrung woman who has been employed as the CEO of the Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency since 1999. On a National level, Aunty Muriel is Chair of the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC), the peak Australian agency for Indigenous child and family services. Aunty Muriel is active on many statewide boards and committees concerning children, families and the Indigenous community, including the Aboriginal Children’s Forum; Aboriginal Justice Forum; Coalition of Peaks Joint Council on Closing the Gap, the Aboriginal Community Elders Service and is on the Elders Standing Group for the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria to name just a few. Aunty Muriel’s contribution to her community and to Victoria has been recognised in many awards. In 2019 Aunty Muriel was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day Honours for distinguished service to the Indigenous community in Victoria as an advocate for the self-determination and cultural rights of children. In 2024 Aunty Muriel was bestowed the National NAIDOC Person of the Year Award.
