The Kimberley Nurturing Spirits Project is creating space for innovation in healing, prevention, and peacebuilding by strengthening an alliance of Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Community Controlled Organisations (KAWCCOs) working in the primary prevention of domestic and family violence (DFV). The project provides a collective platform for Aboriginal women leaders to come together to share, learn, and support each other, fostering innovative, culturally grounded approaches to community wellbeing and systems change.
The Kimberley region experiences some of the highest rates of DFV in Australia, alongside the deep impacts of intergenerational and transgenerational trauma. Each KAWCCO has been leading place-based initiatives to strengthen trauma-responsive prevention strategies. However, their remoteness and the demands of crisis service delivery often restrict opportunities to collaborate and innovate collectively.
In November 2024, the Kimberley Aboriginal Family Empowerment Alliance was established to provide the mechanisms for these organisations to connect, reflect, and amplify their collective impact. The alliance supports Aboriginal women to lead from a position of cultural authority, building new frameworks for peacebuilding across four interconnected layers—self, family, community, and wider systems.
The next phase of the collaboration focuses on co-designing locally led programs that enhance the skills of service providers while delivering culturally informed trauma education and training to communities. Key community members will be identified and supported through the alliance to provide ongoing leadership and mentoring within their local contexts.
This presentation will share a case study of the Kimberley Nurturing Spirits Project, exploring how creating intentional space for Aboriginal women’s collective innovation fosters healing, peacebuilding, and transformative systems change across the Kimberley.
